E-Commerce

Creating an online store, online invoicing, catalogs, etc can be done in many ways. After lifelong experience I can say that for most companies WordPress with Woocommerce is probably the best fit for the average company or online store’s needs. There are many options aside from starting from scratch: Square/Squarespace, Shopify, Ebay, and far too many more to list. There are also other open-source alternatives like Joomla and Drupal.

However, WordPress’s flexibility combined with a healthy ecosystem of well-maintained plugins wins the ‘best online store’ award from me for several reasons:

  • It is open source — this means that anyone who finds a bug can submit a fix. Anyone who wants to add a feature can submit a fix. It also means much more security as all of the code has to withstand the test of other-people-seeing-it and still be secure. With proprietary stores, the store-owner doesn’t have the ability to know what’s going on.
  • It is easy to create a very high-performance WordPress site because you can install it on the platform of your choice, on the computer of one’s choice. There are also many options for caching pages, and the code is pretty ‘light’
  • Store-owners can easily edit pages and shop items. The catalog is automatically updated. The same info doesn’t need to be updated in multiple locations.
  • Available plugins are vast and creating a new custom plugin is a breeze in wordpress. I consider it more easy than in Drupal and Joomla
